Sourdough Surprises - March

Saturday, February 22, 2014

Awesome job on your monkey bread and pull aparts, guys! They all looked so amazing, and since there were so many different varieties made, you guys should be monkey-ing around months! But make sure you save time for this month's challenge! (And soooo sorry about all the trouble we had with the linky tool! Thank you for all being so patient and helpful while we sorted it all out! Hopefully we have solved all the issues for next month!)

Typically we try to stay away from just straight bread here, instead trying to show you all the amazing things we can create with our starters besides bread. But this month we thought it would be fun to try an Irish Soda Bread! Even if March doesn't scream green beer and shamrocks, soda bread is still a delicious addition to your table!

Soda bread is typically moist, dense, and a little crumbly. It is a rather low gluten bread (since it typically relies on buttermilk and baking powder instead of yeast), so here your sourdough will play more of a flavoring role than a leavening agent. Some people like adding a variety of seeds or raisins or currants. Or neither, the choice is yours!  For inspiration and recipe ideas, please check out our Monthly Inspiration board on Pinterest!

To join us this month:

1. Choose a recipe and bake a delicious soda bread, utilizing your sourdough starter!
2. Take some photos and blog about it on March 20, 2014
3. Make sure that you include a backlink to our blog somewhere in your post
4. Follow this link:  get the InLinkz code  and choose the HTML code that works best for you and your blog. Copy and paste it into the HTML section of your blog. You will know you have done it correctly if you see a little blue frog face.
5. Make sure you enter your post into the linky tool on reveal day so everyone can see what you have made!

Can't wait to see your loaves!

Yummy! I made Irish soda bread a while ago (no sourdough of course), and since I saw it on some blogs these week I was just thinking of making it again.

I just added the linky to my future post and thought you might want to know that there is a typo in the text. "utalizing" should be "utilizing".
